Birth Panno

Tamás Pélis The Birth in Tiszadob Childrens Home

In 1983, one of the most iconic paintings of the Roma art was made, Tamás Péli’s panno, titled The Birth. The 42 m3 huge painting was made for the Children’s Home at the Andrassy Castle in Tiszadob. It was a big discrepancy to paint the myth of the birth on wall of the children’s home – Kali goddess giving birth to her child, the human Manus. Péli’s long-cherished dream was to paint the story of the Roma and how the Roma live. He created a timeless memorial for the Roma and Roma artists in a mythical allegory.
Péli invited Roma intellectuals to participate: musician Géza Szakcsi Lakatos, poet József Kovács (alias Hontalan), Menyhért Lakatos, József Choli Daróczi and István Szentandrássy. They were cooperating in the creation process of historical image of the Roma in Hungary.
The panno, The Birth was published on 24 September 1983.
