Kalderash uses a Romanes word (translated: boiler maker/smith") to describe the members of a Roma minority originally native to Southeastern Europe, who are said to have originated from the social group of blacksmiths. Many Kalderash (but also members of other groups) left the Romanian territories of Walachia and Moldova with the abolition of feudal ties - mostly serfdom, which could amount to slave status - from about 1840. In family groups, they migrated in all directions, including Central and Western Europe. Some of them emigrated overseas.
