Two texts were the source of the play Zigeunerschnitzel [Gypsy Schnitzel] – both dealing with the suffering of the Sinti and Roma over several generations.

In Katzenstreu Stefan Horvath addresses the terror of 4 February 1995: an assassination in which four Roma from Oberwart in Austria lost their lives. In response to the crime, Elfriede Jelinek wrote the play Stecken, Stab und Stangl in 1996. It targets not only the monstrous atrocity itself, but also the media’s handling of it and those who orchestrated public grief.
These two texts provide the material for the beginning of the projected play, whose scenes develop from quotations, images and associations, weaving a dense network of actual and fictitious events, on which emotions and fantasies condense like drops of dew.
