Contextualisation

The Caravan of Memory (Tabór Pamięci) commemorates the Roma murdered by the Nazis in various killing sites across Poland during World War II. Roma carriages and wagons travel through the villages of Żabno, Bielcza and Szczurowa, where the participants visit local cementeries and mass graves to remember the Roma victims. To understand the scale of the Roma Holocaust, the case of the village of Szczurowa would serve as an example. Szczurowa is located 45 km from the city of Tarnów in southern Poland. During the action, 93 Roma inhabitants of the village were shot at the local cemetery; there was only one survivor.
