Ioanida Costache is a violinist and videographer who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology/musicology at Stanford University. Her research explores issues of race and ethnicity, performance/construction of identity, cultural memory, affect, history and trauma as they intersect in Romani musico-oral traditions. Before coming to Stanford, she earned a B.A. in music from Amherst College. Her research in Romania in 2013–2014 was funded by a Fulbright Research Grant. Ioanida’s interest in Romanian-Roma music stems from her Romani heritage; her grandfather was a Romani violinist.
