Charles Newland is a Nottingham-based Romani filmmaker with experience in both photography and journalism. He has worked as a freelancer for the majority of his career and has been commissioned by an array of companies and organisations. Along with Damian Le Bas and Phillip Osborne), he is a founding member of Notown Productions, a London/Nottingham based media collective of Romani filmmakers, writers and visual artists.

Since 2007 he has made a number of short fictional works, documentaries and music videos.
Newland’s films have been shown at festivals across Europe, including the Berlinale and the Gothenberg and Cottbus film festivals. He was commissioned by Tony Gatlif to make a short film for the Collegium Hungaricum Berlin (CHB), and was asked to direct twelve short films for a National Lottery funded Romany History Tales project. He and Osborne were the cameramen for Riley Smith: Portrait of an English Gypsy Tap Dancer (directed by Damian Le Bas), a film which gained international attention. He is also a founder/programmer for Watergate Cinematek, which is based at Broadway Cinema, Nottingham.
He is currently working for Travellers Times magazine and is active as a curator of the BFI/Film Hub Central East-funded programme ‘Gypsies, Roma and Travellers on Film’.
