Having been informed that she should tell only the truth under penalty of perjury, the witness stated as follows:

Around 10 December 1941, I cannot recall the exact date, I was taken as Romni* to the ‘SAJMIŠTE’ camp with my three children: Vukosava, aged 11, Mirjana, aged 6, Ljubomir, aged 9 months, all born in Belgrade, of Eastern Orthodox faith and Serbian nationality, from my legal marriage to Milorad Mirković, coachman from Belgrade, who was taken away with a group of men. I was taken away from the house at No. 80, Peke Pavlovića street by a man named NIKOLA, a gendarme from the 11th quarter, tall, big, brown hair, shaven, aged up to 30 years. I remained in the camp for three months before being released following a plea. In the camp I suffered great deprivation, especially hunger and cold, and acquired wounds due to the squalor in which we lived. Ljubomir, my youngest child, died because I was unable to breastfeed him any longer as my milk had dried up.
I have nothing else to state.

As for the damage claim, I leave it to the Commission’s free estimate.

Contextualisation

Sajmište
About one month after the displacement and killing of the men, all Romani women and children were rounded up by the same German and the Serbian collaborationist authorities. On 10/11 December 1941, as the German soldiers were blockading the streets, Serbian policemen and gendarmes went from door to door, driving out all women and children, loading them onto trucks and taking them to the local gendarmerie station. Less than an hour later, they transferred them to the Sajmište concentration camp. There they were crammed into Pavilion No. 2, separated from the other prisoners, Jewish women and children. They all suffered extreme cold and starvation. Many of them died.

A few weeks later, Romani women and children who were able to prove their permanent residence in the Serbian capital, started to be released from the camp. Those who failed to prove it by the end of March 1942 were killed together with the Jews.

It is estimated that at least 200 out of about 600 Romani inmates died in the camp or immediately after their liberation or were killed in the spring of 1942. ‘Nikola’, the gendarme whom Natalija Mirković blamed to have arrest, was never identified. Individual compensation was not paid to any of the Romani victims.
